The Yabonga Children’s Centre was opened in 2019 in collaboration with the City of Cape Town. An oasis in the centre of Makhaza, Khayelitsha, this facility boasts a gym, soccer playfield, netball court, music rooms, study rooms, computer rooms, training and counselling rooms, a kitchen and dining area to serve 200 children every day. The younger children have their own play areas with a climbing wall and jungle gym area.
The centre is also home to the Respite Unit.
This programme provides temporary residential care to children between the ages of 5 and 10 years who are at risk of abuse or neglect. The Respite Unit is aimed at stabilizing the child’s education and health during a period of six weeks. This allows for our team to assess the child’s specific issues, and to implement a care plan for each child. After the respite period of individual support and household assessment, the children are reunited with their families, and ongoing support is provided to both the child and the family.
